SunEdison (SUNE)

    800 posts in this topic

Does anyone know what kind of gross margin SUNE makes on O and M? This seems to be a very large source and growing source of revenues. Second, Goldman Sachs said that just the part of SUNE that is the chip wafer manufacturing business is worth 5 dollars in stock price. It's been a long time since that part of the business was worth half as much as the solar part, IMHO. Does this mean SUNE is worth over 10 dollars? Is this how Goldman put SUNE on its conviction buy list? Edwards Air Force Base and I think some other huge project are about to get some milestone approvals. I will check on this on the web unless others have the answer. USA just approved another what, millions of acres of land for solar plants. Is this bullish because demand is up big or bearish because there was no mention of SUNE? The stock price seems stuck at 8 dollars or around that; they claim 925 MW in backlog for q3 through q2. Can they make a dollar in earnings off of that? I imagine so. Especially since the backlog seems to grow each quarter. 1 GW in projects at over 20 percent GM.

New 2.5 MW project to supply half of electricity for Bristol Community College. Part of 6 MW SUNE project in that area for schools. SUNE will own and operate the system. Called "turn-key". New Gloucester solar farm will be enough to power 5100 homes -- 75 acre farm. Sun Edison will install 1.5 MW in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi. Working with Seeo on storage system. Lots of small projects recently.

There may be an announcement about a Chilean plant around this time; also I believe the major plant they picked up from Fotowatio at Edwards Air Base should have a milestone at end june. I also noticed that Supower's Apple Maiden plant was completed in Q1.

USAF project finally approved, to be completed this year, also new 15 MW in Malaysia which will be completed this summer, also being largest in that country. here's the air force base story. see the endwhere they say there will be many many more projects. http://www.tucsonsentinel.com/local/report/061413_dm_solar/air-forces-largest-solar-project-planned-davis-monthan/

SUNE will be biggest beneficiary of Obama's effort announced today to both double solar energy, quantum leap DOD solar energy, and get 20% of fed energy from clean energy. Also watch CLNE.

SunEdison Inc. (SUNE), the polysilicon supplier formerly known as MEMC Electronic Materials Inc., surged the most in a year after announcing plans to separate its semiconductor operations in an initial public offering to fund the development of solar farms and pay down debt.

In USA...a lot of money is ready to move out of stock market. And one attractive destination for the big money is ..investing in PV plants...enjoying at least 10-12% stable returns for the next 25 years.

Just imagine...investing 1M$ that returns 10%.. That is $100,000 per year.. for the next 25 years. Now ...tell me...what kind of stock/bank/government guarantees this kind of money? None!!

Now ...take that 1M$ to 10M$ invested in pv plant. Now, we are talking $1M$ return every year for the next 25 years!!

Now...in the worst case scenario...make that 10% to 5%...now we are talking $50,000 guaranteed money every year on 1M$ invested.

That is the kind retirement...we should be dreaming of!!

PV Solar...this is just the beginning.

    I rest my case :)

Red, it is quite impressive. But how could an individual investor be a part of that?

I believe there is a kickstarter style website for PV projects. Individuals can buy their share into solar projects. But I would say some of the projects are risky since you need to get enough info to analyze the risk involves (payment, financial condition of the projects, etc.)

I would keep looking for some kind of Mutual Fund kind of thing investing in these projects with good IRR. Just one way to be part of this.

    http://www.pv-tech.org/news/sunedisons_us6.4_billion_jv_manufacturing_complex_moving_forward

SunEdison’s recently announced feasibility study to potentially establish a fully integrated PV manufacturing complex, including FBR polysilicon production in partnership with the Saudi Arabian government may be closer to reality than previously thought.

SunEdison recently revealed plans for the US$6.4 billion complex and highlighted that it was working with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of the Government of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Arabian Investment Company (Sanabil Investments) on the feasibility of the project.

I have to stress that Sunedisson uses a three reactor system unless they found a way to do another FBR that is not patent protected for the new plant, so they are a bit more expensive than other forms of FBR, they do however have a nice amount of EG quality polysilicon coming out of those reactors so we are talking cheap, high quality product. (Cash cost perhaps 12$/kg I speculate, slightly higher than a single reactor design FBR, but this is just guessing based on electricity costs of 3 reactors vs 1 and slightly more material costs for cleaning each reactor)

Technology day 14th march should be interesting. Really looking forward to see if they managed to cut polysilicon reactor costs even more and if hyperion technology can be used for cheaper wafers now.

Recent Sun Edison Black Rock partner in India setting new low prices

Solar power cost dropping is good news, and if module ASP remains stable even better news (cost reduction from BoS.)
With that said a lot of comments on india solar power projects has been that the bidding round is so aggresive even the winners do not have the ability to build much (They have to wait for costs to drop.) And some argue this is the reason even with a big pipeline India has seen a slow growth so far. I think this is about to change so India should start to grow quicker now.

Article claims avg price has dropped 7% since june. A lot of the worlds demand for solar went to China. Just assuming 10 GW we are at a around 33% demand to china, Prices have moved 0% for the last half a year now.... So whoever is selling in china a lot is not exactly seeing margin squeeze.

Perhaps this is why we see not so much shipments to India? since it is simply too low cost and there is better places to ship ? And would it not give a skewed image of prices if one simply makes an average without accounting for where volumes are sold? I mean if US,Japan and China are stable or up and 80% of volume goes here (just example) while 20% of volume goes to a place where prices are down - even if avg of world is down would not margin of the ones shipping to high asp places increase?

I am not saying prices will remain high, they just as polysilicon prices will come down at some point, I am just saying that I think the speculation about margin squeeze is wrong for a few selected companies. Anyhow soon earning season is upon us and we will have outlook for q1 from the chinese tier 1, should be interesting.

Love it. India needs HUGE energy investment and to say that it reaches on par with coal and with continued decline in total investment costs is going to fuel demand. Solar is the instrument I see beats out politicians as well as their big company partners who promote higher LPG, coal based electricity, and no commitment towards infrastructure.

Solar will make farmers lives easier which still is more than 40% of India's wealth and population. Solar will also set pace in urban areas where electricity keeps rising and when people see the return in as little as 5 years, they will go nuts. Thousands of local companies will jump in to support this growth. It will be a golden sparrow again. Here is to a hope.
