"The perception that fossil fuels are cheap and renewables are expensive is now out of date," says Michael Liebreich, chief executive of BNEF.

Since cost reduction progress of PV has no match, it's dominance as a future energy source will be hard to stop. The power is there in abundance, instantly replenished, just waiting to be harvested.

More good news out of Australia

“With high, LNG-driven domestic gas prices, renewable energy is the cheapest source of new electricity generation,” according to Kobad Bhavnagri, a Sydney-based analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “It is quite conceivable that we could leapfrog straight from coal to renewables to reduce emissions as carbon prices rise.”
